Projects - Student Action Teams Evaluation

Student Action Teams Evaluation

Timeframe: 1999-2002

Source: Victorian Department of Education, Employment and Training

Phase 1:

The Victorian Department of Justice, through the Education Department of Victoria, funded 20 secondary schools the state to develop Student Action Teams to address community safety issues. These teams been investigated local concerns, worked with Local Government and other organisations, and developed research and action programs to address local needs. The issues were diverse: making a local track safe for pedestrians, exploring truancy, identifying unsafe areas in the community, providing safe recreation, making a safe driving advertisement for television and so on.

The Centre provided both formative and summative evaluation services to the project. It ran sessions for teachers and students and provided advice on operation and monitoring of the projects. In 2000, the project was extended and a `How To' Manual developed by the Centre drawing on the experiences of the schools. An evaluation report has been published by the Centre.

Phase 2:

In 2001, the Student Action Teams project was extended to 36 primary and secondary schools across the state. The Centre supported these schools in evaluation activities, supplying them with survey tools and analysing results. This evaluation was primarily concerned with project impact on participants, teachers and schools. A final report of Phase 2 of this evaluation will be produced in 2003.
