ProjectsProjects - School Retention InitiativeTimeframe: 2003-2004 Source: Drug Prevention Council The School Retention Initiative of the Premier's Drug Prevention Council aims to strengthen a community's capactiy to enhance young people's engagement in ongoing learning opportunities. The project focuses on issues for young people under 15 years of age, who are currently not connected or are poorly connected to education, and who are meeting their own educational needs by accessing Adult and Community Education (ACE) programs. The project involves a collaboration between the Centre for Adolescent Health, the Australian Youth Research Centre, the Centre for Youth Drug Studies and the Department of Education and Training. Three pilot communities - Mount Martha, North Geelong and Bendigo - who were already active in the area of student retention, set about exploring the ways in which young people can be supported to remain connected with education in more depth. The method of exploration was participatory action research and took different forms in each community. Contact: Ani Wierenga, Gary Shaw, Helen Stokes Contact: yrc-info@unimelb.edu.au |
