Projects - Reconnecting Young People to Supporting Learning Environments

Timeframe: 2003-2004

Source: Crime Prevention Victoria

The Centre is conducting an evaluation of the Reconnecting Young People to Supporting Learning Environments project for Crime Prevention Victoria. This Project package consists of two programs that will run until the end of 2004. These are:

  • The Early School Leavers Pilot Program which targets young people who are 12-15 years and subject to non-custodial Juvenile Justice orders and who are not attending school;
  • The Truancy Reduction Pilot Program targets young people 10-14 years who exhibit patterns of infrequent and irregular school attendance.

Both programs aim to reconnect young people to education and to reduce offending behaviours. The relationship between truancy, school connection and community safety will be investigated throughout this evaluation. Attention will be paid to attempts to reconnect young people to education and to assess associated direct and indirect on offending or anti-social behaviour. The evaluation has begun to measure program outcomes primarily using self administered questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with a target gorup of young people, their families/significant adults, school staff, program staff and program designers.
