Projects - Evaluation of the William Buckland Foundation Lighthouse Schools

Timeframe: 2000-2003

Source: William Buckland Foundation, Education Foundation

An evaluation is being carried out into the development of different models of effective middle school approaches. Five schools, supported by the Education Foundation and funded by the William Buckland Foundation over a three-year period, are developing innovative classroom curriculum and whole school approaches to improving the quality of schooling for young people in the middle years of schooling. The project was designed to generate models of best practice particularly in terms of the development of partnerships within school communities and enhanced student engagement. The findings indicate that the Lighthouse projects have been successful in reducing student alienation. Teacher professional dvelopment emerged as a key element in the success and sustainability of the different programs. A final report has been submitted to the Education Foundation and is being prepared for publication.
