Five schools, supported by the Education Foundation and funded by the William Buckland Foundation over a three-year period, are developing innovative classroom curriculum and whole school approaches to improving the quality of schooling for young people in the middle years of schooling. The project was designed to generate models of best practice particularly in terms of the development of partnerships within school communities and enhanced student engagement. The findings indicate that the Lighthouse projects have been successful in reducing student alienation. Teacher professional dvelopment emerged as a key element in the success and sustainability of the different programs.
