Projects - 'Earn to Learn': A Feasibility Study'

'Earn to Learn' is a proposed school retention scheme aimed at improving the participation of Koori youth in the Shepparton-Mooropna area in secondary school education. It provides a financial incentive for young people to go to school, and is based on an international model, the UK-based 'Earn as You Learn Scheme'. The scheme would be auspiced by the Rumbalara Football Netball Club in conjunction with local schools and other relevant organisations. The proposal included a full time Project Officer who would be based at the Club and liaise with the schools and overesee the project.

A feasibility study of the proposal was funded by the DOXA Youth Foundation. The purpose of the study was to outline the proposal for the 'Earn to Learn' scheme and to report on its feasibility study. The report presented a case for a three year pilot to be undertaken at the Rumbalara Football Netball Club in Shepparton with secondary schools in the Shepparton region. The study found the proposal of supporting young Koori students to stay at school was a feasible option if the potential community concerns and perceptions could be well managed.
