Mission Statement

The Science and Mathematics Education (SME) cluster conducts its work within the three strands of the triple helix presented in The University of Melbourne’s Growing Esteem document. Within a concern for education of the whole person, SME has a special concern for promoting education in mathematics and science, and aims to be a world leader in the research, learning and teaching, and knowledge transfer of its disciplines. SME recognises the importance of science and mathematics as essential disciplines that allow individuals and groups to understand and contribute to our society.

The Science and Mathematics Education cluster aims to

  • preserve, refine and advance knowledge of how students learn science and mathematics at all levels and how these disciplines can best be taught;
  • provide high-quality research-based education for all those involved in the teaching of science and mathematics, through award and non-award courses;
  • contribute to the improvement of education in science and mathematics by working with local schools, state and national education authorities, international bodies and professional associations, and by promoting community interest in and understanding of science and mathematics.
