Project Title: School based mental health screening for secondary-aged deaf students

Chief Investigator: Dr Maria Remine

Funded by: 2008 Melbourne Graduate School of Education Competitive Grant

Project Summary: This project involves the implementation of a school based mental health screening program for secondary aged deaf students.  The screening program will involve teacher training, parent education and widespread use of parent, teacher and self-report checklists from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The project aims to increase awareness and understanding of the mental health of deaf students in schools.  The involvement of parents, teachers and schools in identifying deaf students at risk of social, emotional and behavioural problems is expected to lead to a more streamlined referral process and more timely access to appropriate psychological services, treatment and care.
