Faculty of Education Competitive Grants

Project Title: Mental health survey of young deaf people in Western Australia

Chief Investigator: Dr Maria Remine

Funded by: 2007 Faculty of Education Competitive Grant

Project Summary: One in four young Australians suffer from mental health problems before the age of 24.  International studies on the mental health of young deaf people have shown that there is a high prevalence of emotional, behavioural and attentional problems in this population.  Currently, the prevalence of mental health problems in Australian young deaf people is unknown.  The aim of this pilot study is to investigate the prevalence of mental health problems in young deaf people in Western Australia.  It is expected that the outcomes from this study will be used to undertake a national mental health survey of young deaf people.
