Melbourne Early Career Researcher Grants

Project Title: Examination of an educational program for Buddhist 'nuns' in regional Thailand

Chief Investigator: Dr Barbara Kameniar

Funded by: 2008 Early Career Researcher Grant Scheme

Project Summary: This project will investigate how Buddhist “nuns” in two regional provinces in Thailand engage with an education program. The micro-ethnographic study will focus on what types of learning are being developed, what social, cultural and economic demands are produced through the program, and what might be taught into the future. Project outcomes will be useful to the educational provider – the Thai Nun’s Institute; to development agencies; and to the research literature on education, gender and development; and will provide a foundation for a larger grant application.
