Melbourne Graduate School of Education Education, Equity and Social Identities

Education, Equity and Social Identities Research Workshops

Thursday August 7th 2008
Frank Tate Room, 1.00-3.00pm

Research Workshop with Bill Green
Strategic Research Professor in the Research Institute for Professional Practice, Learning and Education (RIPPLE) and Professor of Education in the Faculty of Education at Charles Sturt University.

This workshop invites participants to raise and discuss any theoretical ‘sticking points’ or dilemmas in their current research. It might be helpful – but not compulsory – to organise these issues in relation to the Research Group’s themes of ‘equity’, ‘social identities’, and more specifically to the current concentrations on citizenship and new knowledge.

While the format will be relatively informal, participants are asked to have prepared some brief comments to contribute to the discussion and to characterise the issue they would like to raise.

Bill Green, as well as other workshop participants, will respond to comments, in the spirit of a critical and constructive conversation.

All members of EESI and their graduate students are welcome.

Wednesday October 15th 2008
Alice hoy Meeting Room 2, 1.00-3.00pm

Research Workshop with  Ann Phoenix
Professor and Co-Director of Thomas Coram Research Unit, Institute of Education, University of London.

The workshop will begin with a presentation from Ann on constituent elements of psycho-social approaches to researching identity and debates and differences within these approaches.

This will be followed by an analysis of sample research transcripts - from interviews, focus groups etc - with a view to opening up how a psycho-social approach to analysis can work; and the kind of insights and lines of analysis it can generate.

Ann has asked if participants in the workshop could bring along, or ideally send to me beforehand, some excerpts from transcripts that they are working with, or have worked with, or have not yet analysed, or want to revisit. The excerpts do not need to be lengthy, but to capture a sequence in an exchange. Of course, they would be anonymised and confidentiality respected.
