About the Master of Teaching

The University considers the Master of Teaching to be a more comprehensive preparation for the classroom, not only because of its rigour, but because of the configuration and content of the program. Those studying the Secondary stream of the Master of Teaching also have the option of exiting the program after one year with a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary). Those studying the Early Childhood stream can exit after 1.5yrs with a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood).
Program structure and delivery modes
- How many contact hours per week will be required in the Master of Teaching?
For the Early Childhood and Primary streams you can expect to spend up to 15 hours a week at university, plus 2 days per week in schools and block placements each semester.
For the Secondary stream, you can expect to spend up to 18 hours per week at university, plus 2 days in schools and block placements each semester.
- If I decide to exit after completing 150 points (Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching), how long do I have if I want to articulate to a Masters?
The final 50 points of the program can be commenced up to 5 years after completing the Postgraduate Diploma of Teaching. This means that you can start working and have the option of coming back to university to take out the Master of Teaching at a later stage if you wish.
- Will classes in the Master of Teaching be conducted in the evening or online?
No, all classes are conducted during the day
Entry requirements and applications
- How and when do I apply for the Master of Teaching?
Master of Teaching applications are made through VTAC. Applications usually open in early August and close at the end of September. Late applications are also accepted through VTAC until the beginning of November. We may accept direct applications to the Melbourne Graduate School of Education if there are places in the program after the VTAC selection process is complete.
- I am part way through/ have completed the Graduate Diploma in Education. Does this count towards the Master of Teaching?
No. However ,if you complete the Graduate Diploma in Education you would be eligible to apply to undertake a Master of Education. View our study areas to find out more.
- What are the entry requirements for the Master of Teaching?
For all streams:
- An approved undergraduate degree from any institution
- If you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident, you may also need to meet English language requirements. View a full list of requirements.
Additional requirements for Secondary Stream:
- satisfaction of learning area studies requirements within your undergraduate degree. The learning area guidelines can be found in the Master of Teaching brochure.
- Are there scholarships available for the Master of Teaching?

- Can I defer my offer for the Master of Teaching?
No. There are no deferrals for the Master of Teaching.
- Can I defer my HECS payment if I get an offer for the Master of Teaching?
Yes. You do not have to pay your fees upfront. You can defer your payment until a later date. HECS-HELP is available for those who receive a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and FEE-HELP is available for those who receive a full fee place. For more information go to www.goingtouni.gov.au
Professional Recognition
- Will the Master of Teaching (and associated Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching) qualify me to teach in states other than Victoria
Yes, the Master of Teaching will qualify you to register with Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), which is recognised across all states and territories of Australia upon the appropriate application. However, some states may have particular requirements with regard to your undergraduate degree so you should check with the registration authorities in the state in which you might want to teach
- Can I take my Master of Teaching qualification to teach in countries other than Australia?
With a structure and content that aligns with global standards, the Master of Teaching will be your passport to cross teaching borders. Australian teaching qualifications are recognised in countries around the world.
The Melbourne Graduate School of Education recommends students' check with registration bodies in the country / state / province for individual requirements.
