ICEAPS: The extent and use of local professional and business area knowledge and skills of Australians working in China
Jane Orton
What levels of local professional/business area knowledge and skills would Australian personnel working in today's China need to be thoroughly competent? What levels do the current group have? Do they consider them sufficient? How do they draw on their knowledge and skills to make a difference in their work? What recommendations do they make for those will follow them?
Although leaders of Australia's workforce are aware of the significance of China in Australia's future, there are no hard data available to answer these questions. The aim of this research is to begin to fill this gap. Through analysis of survey responses and interviews of Australians working in a wide variety of sectors in China, findings provided a detailed, up-to-date, specifically Australian picture of existing and desirable levels of professional/business area knowledge and skills of Australians working in China that will greatly benefit employers, and allow universities to sharpen the target of professional education courses, more reliably linking study with practice.
