Outline of Suggested Induction for Academic Staff

An introduction for new academic staff in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education: Policies, resources and services to assist you in making a successful start at the University of Melbourne.

General University wide orientation

Academic staff orientation program

University-wide sessions run in late January and in July prior to the start of first and second semester and are advertised widely. The Academic Staff Orientation Program is organised and conducted jointly by the Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE), the Department of Human Resources, Melbourne Research and Innovation Office and the Melbourne School of Graduate Research. Sessions are advertised widely including through the School Dean. All new staff are strongly encouraged to attend.

  • Developing and Sustaining a Research Program: Advice on the support provided by the University on all aspects of research
  • Supervising Postgraduate Research: Clarifying roles, responsibilities and expectations
  • Teaching and Learning: Key policies to do with teaching, and the evaluation of teaching
The CSHE also conducts the Foundation of Effective Teaching workshops. These workshops are designed for academics new to the University of Melbourne and/or teaching in a higher education context. Workshops cover core issues in teaching and learning including effective lecturing, the skills of small group teaching, quality in student assessment, and the effective use of multimedia and educational technology. Registration and inquiries for both programs can be made via the CSHE.

 

Melbourne Graduate School of Education orientation

The School has a comprehensively planned program of induction for supervisors. This includes Induction checklist and an example of an Induction and Training Schedule for new tenured or contract Academic Staff.

Services supporting teaching and research for students and staff

CSHE: Leadership in research, development and consultancy in the field of higher education including advice, resources and workshops on effective teaching

Melbourne Graduate School of Education Student support: Education Student Centre provides advice in relation to:

  • Course structure and requirements
  • Adding or cancelling subjects
  • Assignment submission
  • Taking Leave of Absence or deferring commencement of a course
  • Withdrawing from or discontinuing a course
  • Applying for credit for previous studies
  • Applying for Special Consideration
  • Scholarships
  • Research students candidature
  • Thesis examination
  • University support services
  • Changing address or contact details

 Student advisers can help students with:

  • Enrolment and Course planning
  • International exchange programs
  • Credit for previous study
  • Special examinations for students with disabilities
  • Awards and prizes
  • Advice on course applications and Selection issues

 Student advisers are available Monday to Friday between 9am and 5.00pm: student appointments can be made by telephoning ESC on 8344 8285 during office hours.

Professional Practice Coordinators:

  • Organise practical experience in schools and other settings
  • Support student teachers in professional practice subjects
  • Provide information about settings and experiences
  • Provide information at briefing sessions on practicum requirements prior to each placement
  • Liaise with schools and other education authorities
  • Process student professional pactice results
  • Manage police check process
  • Organise School supervision visits.

The School produces two guides to support staff in understanding university policies and procedures on student administration and academic matters.

The Student Information Guide and Academic Guidelines are available from the Education Student Centre.

Melbourne School of Graduate Research: For advice, resources and workshops on research and higher degree supervision for students and academics.

Melbourne Graduate School of Education Research Services:Supports higher degree research students and academics, including grant and tender applications, research contracts, human research ethics, research training, publications and industry liaison. Research Services supports the work of the Melbourne Education Research Institute (MERI), Melbourne Graduate School of Education.

The Melbourne Research and Innovation Office (MRIO) for information regarding grants, publications, research statistics, commercialization, Intellectual Property.

EdIT: Ed-IT provides & supports the IT requirements of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, including student computer labs, staff hardware & software, postgraduate and research computing, networks & Servers, multimedia and online resources you are able to request assistance online.

School online student support: The School provides support and assistance to students who study online.

Information Division support: Assistance for academics wishing to incorporate multimedia and educational technologies into their teaching and research:

  • Using the Learning Management System
  • Courseware development
  • Information literacy
  • Flexible and collaborative learning
  • Emerging technologies

University library: Order resources to support your teaching and research. The library can place in-demand books and articles on ‘reserve desk’ to assist student access and has a growing number of electronic journals and databases with much online support available.

Learning Management System (LMS): LMS is in transition with Blackboard 6 to be implemented for 2006/2007. It provides a secure, web-based teaching and learning environment for your subjects where collaborative learning is supported with public and protected areas. Webraft is the older system and will not be available after the 30th of November 2007

Language and Learning Skills Unit (LLSU): Provides services to students to assist them with effective study practices. LLSU also provides resources and publications to assist teaching staff with students from disadvantaged or diverse backgrounds including:

  • students from low SES backgrounds
  • students from non-English speaking backgrounds
  • students with a disability
  • women in non-traditional areas of study
  • students from rural and isolated areas

International Student Coordinator: Services include pastoral care, transition activities, academic and linguistic support, School tutoring service for International/NESB students, advocacy and referral to appropriate support services.

It is important that academic staff members liaise closely with the International Student Coordinator concerning international students who are experiencing academic or emotional difficulties so that appropriate support can be provided at an early stage. In addition staff should refer NESB students with English language or academic difficulties to the School tutoring service for assistance. The School tutor is an LLSU staff member who offers ongoing support in one-on-one tutorials to help students build up their skills and understanding of academic expectations in a new cultural/educational setting. Short courses will also be provided in collaboration with academic staff. Student appointments can be made through the Front Counter of ESC.

University of Melbourne International Student Services: Advice for you and your international students and supports students and their families from pre-arrival to completion of course. Aims to minimise transition issues and maximise opportunities for professional and personal development.

Disability Liaison Unit: Can advise you on a wide range of support for students with a disability. Inquiries from students and staff welcome. Located on Parkville campus in Masson Rd.

Centre for Indigenous Education: Focuses on recruitment and support service for Indigenous students. Provides meeting rooms, study areas, computers and a resource library. Located in Old Physics Building.

Services and facilities that support your workload and career development

 

Human Resources: For advice on all HR matters including:

  • Policy and Procedures Manual (‘PPP’) including information regarding promotion. The CSHE and HR run annual sessions in May advising those considering applying for promotion
  • Performance Development: Aimed at fostering ongoing professional and career development of all staff Links to the goals of Department/University. This relates to confirmation, increments and promotion and training sessions are provided
  • Leave, including study leave
  • Promotion
  • Salary packaging
  • Themis online: to access your electronic pay slips, submit leave requests electronically, and access leave balances. Maintain your personal details, banking/salary details, qualifications and emergency contact person details.

Timetabling and Venue Hire: Advice on finding lecture theatres, booking University venues for teaching and non-teaching purposes and consultations and online training in using facilities available.

Policies that matter

Human Resources Policies:This HR site provides an overview of key policies with which you need to be familiar with.

Academic staff responsibilities and compliance: This website listing Academic Policies and Guidelines is regularly updated as new policies are adopted by Academic Board.

Copyright: It is your responsibility to understand and comply. Legal requirements and limits apply and there are different requirements for teaching, research and students.

Risk Management: Risk Management Office can advise you on:

  • Safety information
  • Environmental management
  • Insurance issues
  • Workcover and rehabilitation
  • Travel risks (e.g. World trouble spots)

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S): Safety Map and Environmental Management System manages health and safety on campus. Your local EH&S induction provides information on:

  • Individual responsibilities
  • Local emergency procedures and first aid
  • Incident reporting
  • Security

Off-campus activities: If you organise/supervise field work, placements, site visits and/or volunteer programs, the Risk Management Office can advise.

Key points to remember

  • Consider your fitness for travel and participation in the activity (including for example, vaccinations)
  • Determine the safety of the method of travel to the site
  • Assess the risks of the location to which you are travelling
  • Assess the risks of the activity itself

Plagiarism: The plagiarism website provides advice, including emphasis on educational strategies rather than punitive action for educating students, workshops for staff and Turnitin software for checking electronic documents.

Staff-student relationships and conflict of interest: Your position of trust with students implies a series of responsibilities.

Use of the Internet, email and electronic communications: Staff are entitled to use the University's computing and network facilities only for legitimate University business and for limited personal use. This use should fall within the boundaries of normal appropriate practice.

Consultancies/paid outside work: For obligations regarding consultancies/paid outside work.
