Rannah Scamporlino

Master of Education

"In 2006 I decided to enrol in a Master of Education degree, after coming to the conclusion that I had to put aside my fears, concerns and doubts and just go for it. I found it much easier to enrol than I had anticipated. Right from my first web search, phone call enquiry, on campus visit to now - a graduand - I have enjoyed being a student at the University of Melbourne and had incredible support all the way through.

Whilst on the program it was important that I received encouragement from the academic staff because I hadn't submitted a university assignment for some time. My confidence grew by talking with the lecturers and this support provided a basis for me to very successfully build an array of impressive grades.

The flexibility of being able to tailor the Master's course content meant that I was able to focus on personal areas of interest which are highly relevant to all aspects of my professional leadership role in a school environment. Essentially, I was readily able to apply the theory I was learning in very practical ways in my work context. Each assessment piece was able to be tailored to an aspect, or aspects, of my everyday work. My studies also presented an opportunity to share current leadership, management and pedagogical thinking and practices with my school colleagues, who were very supportive and keen to try new ideas and improve processes and systems.

When I started my Masters degree I was a leading teacher in a primary school, with aspirations of one day becoming a Principal. I am certain that by working through the Masters program I was able to develop the necessary skills and knowledge required to expedite my promotion to Principal. Twelve months into the program I was appointed to a Principal position. All the way through my course there were success stories of people attaining their professional goals. I was, and am, proud to be among them.

During my time at the University of Melbourne I have established a network of new and inspirational colleagues and developed close friendships that I would not have had if it were not for this experience. This year was unfortunately my last year as a post-grad student at Melbourne - so I decided not put off my Doctorate and have just enrolled once again. I will be around for awhile yet!"
