Are you interested in secondary teaching?

About this career

A career in secondary teaching gives you the opportunity to specialise in teaching the subjects you most enjoy, whether these are mathematics and science , arts and literacy, or technology subjects. Secondary teachers usually teach two or more subjects to a range of classes from Year 8 up to Year 12.

The current shortage of qualified secondary teachers means that good positions are readily available in the public and private school systems and you can expect to have a range of opportunities when starting out.

About the rewards

Experienced teachers can look forward to many opportunities for promotion and advancement, ranging from positions as year or subject co-ordinators, up to assistant principal and principal.

In Victoria, the starting salary for graduate teachers is around $45,000. Experienced teachers with more than four years experience can expect to earn from $51,000 up to $66,000 depending on their classification. You can learn more about current classifications and salary expectations for teachers at: http://www.teaching.vic.gov.au/employcond/salaries.htm

How to get there

From 2008, students can qualify to be a secondary teacher after 12 months, 18 months, 2 years or 2 1/2 years thanks to our flexible course options and delivery modes.

Students initially enrol in a 200-point Master of Teaching (Secondary), but have the choice of fastracking their way into the classroom through an early exit option, which qualifies them with a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) after the completion of 150-points.

Both the 150-point Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) and the 200-point Master of Teaching (Secondary) are targeted at those who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree and aspire to become a teacher.

For even more flexibility, the the Secondary Teaching stream will be offered in Accelerated Full-time and Reduced Load Full-time. Visit the Master of Teaching website for more information.
