Educational Psychology Provisional Registration

Just as you will need to obtain a Police Check before you begin your first Practicum placement, you will also need to begin the process of application for Provisional Registration with the Psychologists' Board of Victoria. Please apply for registration as soon as possible after your enrolment as it may take some time to process.

The Australian Psychological Society

As a student you are eligible to apply for Student Membership of the Australian Psychological Society.

The Australian Psychological Society is the national body through which the interests of both the science and profession of psychology are represented. It is the main organisation to which psychologists in Australia belong and has over 12,000 members.

In most states of Australia, fully qualified members have the right to use the initials M.A.P.S. or F.A.P.S. after their name. Members of the public and agencies utilising the services of psychologists can contact the Society to ascertain whether a psychologist is a member of the Society.

Some psychologists offer a range of general services while others have more specialised training and areas of practice. The Society recognises a number of specialist fields of practice through its professional Colleges. Membership of an APS College requires additional years of training and experience. The APS also currently has 13 Interest Groups which are open to all membership grades.

There are eight specialist Colleges. These are the College of Clinical Psychologists, College of Clinical Neuropsychologists, College of Community Psychologists, College of Counselling Psychologists, College of Forensic Psychologists, College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists, College of Organisational Psychologists, College of Sport Psychologists.

The Colleges serve an important role in quality assurance and maintenance of practice standards and have various additional requirements for postgraduate studies, internships and supervision for membership. College membership is an indicator of recognised specialist competence and skills in the particular field of practice.

The College with which the Master of Educational Psychology Program is specifically accredited is the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists. Educational and Developmental Psychologists apply psychological principles to enhance the intellectual, social and emotional development of individuals.

They typically work with children, students, parents and teachers. They may be involved in educational and developmental assessment, advising on educational policy and school curricula, providing guidance and counselling, career guidance, and advice on child and adolescent health issues.
