Woods and Forests: Between Magic and Ecological Reality
An exhibition...

Woods and Forests: Between Magic and Ecological Reality celebrates children’s artistic responses to the natural environment and their place within it. Working with groups of 3-5 year old children, teachers promoted activities of care, curiosity and wonder for the life of trees within an Australian context. Through inquiry-based learning that encouraged perception, exploration, expression and reflection, the children investigated the ecology of trees, including growth, the results of forest bush-fires and trees as habitats for animals. Children also explored, through fantasy and imagination, the magical experience of being part of the forest world, which included a nest building activity.

Woods and Forests: Between Magic and Ecological Reality responded to a call for submissions by the L’Eta Verde Association (etaverde@tin.it) an organization based in Rome, Italy, committed to international research and projects that contribute to inter-cultural understanding and environmental safeguard. This interdisciplinary arts-centred project was an exploration of the delicate balance of nature, the teachers and children created visions of possible realities through art and narratives.

This project has been further developed as a Teaching and Learning tool and is available as an interactive multimedia CD-Rom for educators of children up to and including Grade 2. Click here for details. The theme based Unit of Work includes Video Samples, a Teaching Guide and comprehensive Lesson Plans with assessment guidelines. All ELC products comply with current Australian Curriculum Standards.
