Boorai - The Children's Art Gallery

Coming Closer : Sharing stories through painting, drawing and dancing.
An exhibition of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children’s art

  • Gallery 1: By the children from The University of Melbourne's Early Learning Centre, Melbourne Australia
  • Gallery 2: By the children from Yappera Kindergarten, Children Services Cooperative, Thornbury, Victoria Australia
  • Gallery 3: By the children from The Aboriginal Outreach Program, Mareeba, Northern Queensland, Australia

Coming Closer brings together the works of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children collected from three early childhood programs including:

  • Yappera Kindergarten, Children Services Cooperative, Thornbury, Victoria (a preschool for Aboriginal children)
  • The Aboriginal Outreach Program, Mareeba, Northern Queensland
  • The University of Melbourne’s Early Learning Centre
Child art exhibitions provide opportunities for individuals and communities to share and celebrate the creative insights and artistic skills of children across cultures. Coming Closer provides a timely opportunity to share understandings between Australian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultures as expressed through children’s art. It affirms the significance of story and art in the lives of children, and the power of art as a vehicle for communication across cultures.

"...all arts forms are deeply embedded in and are an outward expression of cultures. The arts help to shape cultural identity, to reaffirm, challenge and give life to the beliefs and traditions of cultural groups." - Curriculum Corporation.1994. p.8

Jan Deans and Robert Brown from The Early Learning Centre have coordinated the Coming Closer project. They have been assisted by a number of people with special knowledge of Australian Aboriginal culture including:
  • George Jillimablu: Aboriginal Story-teller/Artist
  • Boori Pryor: Aboriginal Story-teller/Performer and writer
  • Meme McDonald: Children’s book writer and a co-writer with Boori Pryor
  • Donna Wright: Coordinator of Yappera Children’s Services Cooperative
  • Lillian Fourmile: Artist and facilitator at the Mareeba Aboriginal Outreach Program
  • Gerry Fourmile: Facilitator of the Mareeba Aboriginal Outreach Program
  • Joy Murphy: Wurundjeri Elder
  • Mark Williams: Koorie Liaison Officer for the Northern Region, Melbourne
The Coming Closer project has been inspired by the expressive nature of children and made possible by the commitment and expertise of teachers, artists and professionals.

Coming Closer in Mareeba, Northern Queensland

The Coming Closer project began in Mareeba, Northern Queensland. Boori Pryor and Meme McDonald worked with children at the Mareeba Aboriginal Outreach Program under the guidance of Lillian and Gerry Fourmile. The artworks collected from Mareeba were created by children who were encouraged to draw and paint their responses to three varied experiences. These included:
  • A traditional dance given by the Mossman Dancers performed publically during NAIDOC week
  • A traditonal story about the Wanjin spirit told by Boori Pryor
  • Australian wildlife and traditional indigenous symbols introduced by Lilian Fourmile
