Boorai, the word for 'baby' or 'child' in Wurundjeri, is the name of a unique children's Art Gallery, near the Yarra River in Abbotsford, Melbourne.

 

Gallery Services

Boorai - The Children's Art Gallery is a new vision, one that is inspired by the natural creativity of children. It has been established by The University of Melbourne’s Early Learning Centre to present exhibitions that stimulate and challenge audiences to recognize and value, the personal, social and cultural comments expressed by young children through the arts and language.

Boorai develops and presents exhibitions for local and international audiences and has
established partnerships with a number of public and private organisations. It provides a
variety of services including:

  • The provision of a professional venue suitable for touring exhibitions and related
    seminars
  • The development and presentation of thematic exhibitions for use in permanent displays and for touring services
  • Professional consultation for external organisations.

The desire and capacity to construct, understand and communicate by inventing symbolic forms underpins the history and development of the human race. Through movements, sounds, words, images and constructions, children explore their understandings of themselves and the world around them.

In an increasingly global community, Boorai - The Children’s Art Gallery, places emphasis on exhibitions which foster intercultural understanding for children, families and the wider society.

An Invitation...
The Early Learning Centre is committed to the development and presentation of child art exhibitions in a variety of local, national and international settings. It provides a permanent venue for children's art. Boorai invites individuals and groups to:

  • Contribute significant child art exhibitions for display at Boorai - The Children’s Art Gallery
  • Collaborate in joint projects centred on the development of collections of children’s art from diverse cultures.
  • Host touring exhibitions developed by Boorai - The Children's Art Gallery
