SOFTWARE
SPSS

SPSS is a powerful statistical and data management software system for data analysis. It is available for all major operating systems. The microcomputer version is set up in a graphical environment and most of the tasks can be performed by using menus and selecting options in dialog boxes. The mainframe versions (Rubens, Ariel) require the knowledge of the SPSS command language. SPSS releases for all operating systems contain comprehensive online help that is available at any point of an SPSS session. The SPSS system is portable across different computing environments.

The recent SPSS releases for different operating systems are not exactly the same. The SPSS PC/Windows version is the most "advanced" version. The comparison of the statistical contents available on different platforms is shown in the table below.

For the Windows 95/98/NT/2000 operating systems there are additional stand-alone statistical programs distributed by SPSS (not always fully SPSS products) that cooperate with SPSS. These products are not available for Macintosh computers or mainframe computers.

OBLIGATIONS OF DEPARTMENTAL LOCAL IT EXPERTS

  • The installation cannot take place before an internal order/purchase order is sent to R&ES.
  • The software should be upgraded in departmental labs and on users' computers as soon as a new version becomes available. However, sometimes, there may be good reasons for not upgrading immediately (e.g. a current course is being run using notes which specifically describe the existing version). In such situations upgrades should be carried out at the first convenient time. In some special cases, such as if a new version hasn't been tested properly, the two most recent versions should be installed. LITEs will be informed if this occurs.
  • If a department has a 100+ licence the departmental LITE must keep records of installations. However, it would be greatly appreciated if LITEs would email Ewa Karafilowska at R&ES about new users (names and email addresses), for the purpose of "keeping users up to date" in stats packages issues.
  • If a department holds copies of installation CDs/floppies, all disks must be labeled with the following information:
