LITE : Local Information Technology Expert
The University's support model for computing in departments and faculties is that
day-to-day problem solving, and local IT management, is provided by local staff,
known as Local IT Experts (LITEs). Contact your LITE in the first instance for;
- advice and assistance in using IT in University work
- advice and assistance in puchasing hardware and software
LANAD : Local Area Network Administrators
LANAD refers both to Local Area Network Administrators, and to the Local Area Network
Administrators group. Membership of the group is available to staff whose duties
include administration of local computer networks and related facilities in departments
or faculties. Many LANADs are also LITEs
Distributed support model;
The University has a distributed computing environment. Some aspects of the network are
centrally administered by ITS and others are administered locally. The central supercomputers,
basic network infrastructure and centralised administration systems such as DAS and Merlin are
administered by ITS. ITS is also responsible for the overall IT enviroment within the University.
Faculties, departments and affiliated institutions are responsible for local area networks,
local computers and individual workstations. Appropriate IT staff
should be employed to service local systems and to support staff in the department or faculty.
LITEs or LANADs can obtain assistance with immediate problems from ITS Technical Support.
For strategic advice, or help with more complex or ongoing problems assistance is available from
an IT Consultant employed by ITS. ITS provides many other support services for LITEs and the University
IT community in general.
Within the Faculty of Education, all LITEs and LANADS are members of the Faculty LITE group
and as such have access to the lite@edfac mailing list. This group meets every
second Tuesday to discuss IT issues within the Faculty.
