Course InformationOnline Subject ListingSubject Descriptions On this page: Post Graduate Certificate in Assessment and Evaluation Master of Assessment and Evaluation Subject Offerings Master of Education (specialising in Evaluation) Application Forms Courses in Assessment and Evaluation The Post Graduate Certificate in Assessment and Evaluation and the Master of Assessment and Evaluation are comprehensive specialist training programs. They provide opportunities for both local and overseas students to develop higher order skills and conceptual understanding in these areas. They are suitable for personnel employed in educational, government and industrial organisations who want to take a leadership role in the field of assessment and evaluation. The courses aim to produce graduates who are able to design and manage assessment and evaluation programs at a high level, to make effective use of associated writings and research and to develop superior knowledge and understanding of assessment and evaluation theory and practice. Both the Post Graduate Certificate and the Masters degree encompassess particular generic skills. On completion of the courses, students should be able to:
The assessment specialist strand combines theoretical and practical studies that will enable students to acquire state-of-the-art skills in the design, development and application in assessment for purposes related to learning, credentialing, selection and policy development. The evaluation strand provides opportunities for students to come to grips with the latest evaluation concepts and skills, and to undertake and /or manage policy and program evaluation studies. The combined assessment and evaluation strand provides opportunities for students to acquire specialised methodological skills in assessment and evaluation. The generic nature of these skills will find natural applications in the social, political and behavioural sciences. It is a requirement of the Master of Assessment and Evaluation that a student complete one subject from the combined assessment and evaluation strand, and at least one subject from either the evaluation or assessment strands. Students can elect to study a maximum of two 25-point subjects outside of the approved subject list with the approval of the Course Co-ordinator. Subjects offered within the Assessment and Evaluation Programs and the Master of Education (specialising in Evaluation) are also available to students across all departments of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education and across the University. This arrangement caters for students who wish to undertake an evaluation subject in conjunction with a graduate qualification in areas such as Educational Administration, Public Policy, Social Science Research Methods and Social Work. Post Graduate Certificate in Assessment and Evaluation The Post Graduate Certificate in Assessment and Evaluation consists of 50 points and is normally completed in one year part-time or six months full-time. In order to complete the Post Graduate Certificate a participant is required to undertake two subjects (each 25 points) from the following list. 482 610 Introduction to Evaluation 482 611 Introduction to Research Methods 482 612 Evaluation Project 472 611 Introduction to Assessment 472 612Assessment Instrument Development Most subjects can be undertaken by distance mode using the Internet making it possible to complete the Post Graduate Certificate in Assessment and Evaluation as an external student. It is possible for students who complete the Post Graduate Certificate in Assessment and Evaluation and have experience in the area to enrol in the 100 point Masters program Master of Assessment and Evaluation The Master of Assessment and Evaluation consists of 150 points and is normally completed in three years part-time or one and a half years full-time. Students usually choose to undertake one of two streams: Coursework and Thesis, or Coursework only. Another option available to some applicants is to complete 100 points of study by undertaking a thesis and one 25 point subject or coursework (four 25 point subjects). Coursework and Thesis Stream The Master of Assessment and Evaluation consists of 150 points which is made up of three streams and is normally completed in one and a half years full-time or three years part-time. In order to complete the research stream a participant is required to undertake two subjects (ie 50 points of coursework) from the approved subject list and complete a major thesis of 30,000 words. Graduates of this course are eligible to apply for the PhD or Doctor of Education programs. It is also possible to undertake the thesis Stream 150A which is made up of coursework(three subjects) and a 20,000 word thesis (including research methodology). The Centre staff can advise you on subject choice and selection for specialisation. Coursework Only Stream In order to complete the Master of Assessment and Evaluation (Coursework Only Stream), you will be required to undertake six subjects (ie 150 points of coursework) from the pool listed. Students will need to select subjects from the approved subject list, all of which are equivalent to 25 points. At least one subject must be from the combined assessment and evaluation subjects, and at least one subject must be from either the list of evaluation subjects or from the list of assessment subjects. This Masters program provides theoretical and technical skills in assessment and evaluation, based upon the latest research findings of the Centres. It is the only Masters program offered of its kind. The first stream consists of five evaluation subjects (or approved alternatives), a methdology subject, and a minor thesis. The second stream includes two evaluation subjects (or approved alternatives), methodology and a major thesis. Students undertaking the third stream would study one subject and a minor thesis. Advanced standing is required to enter this stream. It is possible to complete a Master of Education (coursework only) by online delivery using the internet.
