About Our Courses

The Post Graduate Certificate in Evaluation and Master of Evaluation are programs of professional development for students who wish to take a leadership role in program evaluation. Each course aims to enable students to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of evaluation theory and practice;
  • develop strong data collection and analysis skills; and importantly
  • apply these skills and understandings to a range of professional settings.

Both the certificate and masters programs can be undertaken full-time or part-time, as well as on-campus or off-campus (i.e. online). They are currently the only programs of their kind in Australasia.

Who Are These Courses Designed For?

The Post Graduate Certificate in Evaluation and Master of Evaluation are suitable for both local and overseas students from any discipline. Students who enroll in these courses include policy makers, program planners, managers, project officers, teachers, performance auditors and consultants. They are employed in a wide-range of settings including public sector organizations, non-government agencies as well as international aid and development.

Subjects offered within the Master of Evaluation are also available to students in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education and across the University. This arrangement caters for students who wish to undertake an evaluation subject in conjunction with a graduate qualification in areas such as Educational Administration, Public Policy, Health related studies, Social Work and Development Studies.

Post Graduate Certificate in Evaluation

The Post Graduate Certificate in Evaluation (PC-EVAL) consists of 50 points and is normally completed in one year part-time or six months full-time.

The Master of Evaluation (coursework only stream) consists of 100 points and is normally completed in two years part-time or one year full-time. To complete the Master of Evaluation, you will be required to undertake six subjects. These include two compulsory subjects and four electives.

Part-time students

In the first semester of their enrolment part-time students begin the course by undertaking Program Evaluation: Forms and Approaches (a compulsory 25 point subject). In their second and third semester students then complete four of the following 12.5 point electives:

  • Debates in Evaluation

Students complete the Master of Evaluation in their fourth semester of study by undertaking the advanced subject ‘Impact Evaluation: Principles and Practice’ (a 25 point subject).

Full-time students

Full-time students undertake Program Evaluation: Forms and Approaches and two 12.5 point electives in their first semester of study. This is followed by Impact Evaluation: Principles and Practice and two more 12.5 point subjects in their final semester of study.

Coursework and Thesis Stream
(MR-EVAL)

The Master of Evaluation coursework and thesis stream consists of 150 points completed in one and a half years full-time or three years part-time.
