Youth/Arts: expressing cultural identity

Explore how young people create their social and personal identities through artistic media. This subject will include visits to galleries and cultural sites, a ‘street research’ project integrating video and multimedia, and contribution to an exhibition of student produced ‘mini cultures’ such as installations and street drama.

Story, Symbol and Meaning in the Arts

A practical and theoretical study of how humans construct and communicate meaning through the expressive symbol systems of the arts, focusing on narrative in drama, literature, visual arts, music and dance. Assessment includes a practical creative project.

Knowledge, learning and culture

Observe the significance of cultural and contextual framings of knowledge and learning, exploring topics such as the sociological, historical, political and cultural influences on knowledge.

Note: this subject requires successful completion of ‘Understanding, knowing and learning’

Concepts of childhood

Examine changing concepts of childhood through significant twentieth century research, with a focus on the rights of the child in contemporary society.

Childhood youth identities and change

This subject focuses on children and young people’s identity formation in a context of social change, exploring the impact of media, workplace relations, digital communications, and family life on how young people see and present themselves.

Deafness and Communication

This subject will explore deafness from a wide range of social, cultural and technological perspectives. It will investigate the impact of deafness on communication, literacy, social development, access and equity, and also consider how technology impacts on the lives of people who are deaf. A brief introduction to sign language will also be included.
