Melbourne Graduate School of Education Breadth Subjects

Overview of breadth subjects

If you are enrolled in any of the University of Melbourne’s New Generation undergraduate degrees, you may want to consider choosing your Breadth subjects from the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE).

Breadth subjects must be selected from outside your major study area. The MGSE’s Breadth offerings consist of 16 subjects designed to widen your horizons and enrich your core studies. They are structured as three themed clusters of subjects, one sequence of subjects, and a single first year subject, Sports Coaching: Theory and practice.

With the exception of the ‘Understanding Knowledge’ sequence, you can select your subjects at any year level to suit your interests, without committing to following the cluster through in other years.

Alternatively, you may wish to follow the sequence, or any of the three clusters of subjects, for the duration of your course.

Each of these subjects counts as 12.5 points towards the 75 points of Breadth subjects you need to complete your degree.

If you are interested in creative play in children, sports coaching, community practice in the arts, digital technologies, social identities or the nature of knowledge, you can expand the breadth and depth of your learning, and enrich your sense of yourself in the world.

Breadth subjects can also be taken by students doing the Bachelor of Engineering.
