Summary
The Assessment Research Centre (ARC) has been developing computer-administered tests of speaking, listening and reading for non-native speakers of English. These computer-based modules are complimented by a paper-based test of written English to form a comprehensive literacy assessment package.
In 2005, several pilot studies and field trials have been undertaken for the twofold purpose of collecting initial test data and fine-tuning the content delivery process. Item Response Theory (IRT) has been applied to calibrate all initial test data using ConQuest (Wu, Adams and Wilson, 1998). Programmatically, the testing modules have progressed from a single data collection screen to a dual-screen testing system, engaging both a qualified assessor and a suitable candidate. Although standalone at the moment, it is anticipated that the testing package will soon be integrated with internet-enabled data transfer and reporting technology.
Reporting is another considerable facet of this project, and the ARC is currently developing an internet-enabled analysis and reporting solution.
