Our History

The Melbourne Education of today encompasses many of the institutions responsible for teacher education in Victoria. Teacher education on the Parkville site goes back to the 1880s. The institutions that make up Melbourne Education include:

150 years at a glance

1853 Legislation establishing the University of Melbourne is passed through Parliament
1870 The Training Institution offers the first two-year Trained Teacher's Certificate
1888 Construction commences on the 1888 Building, home of the Melbourne Teachers' College with the first intake of students in 1889
1893 The Training Institution closes as part of depression retrenchment.  The 1888 Building is leased to a private school until 1899
1899 Frank Tate appointed principal of The Training College (formerly called the Training Institution)
1900 The Training College reopens
1902 John Smyth appointed principal of The Training College
1903 University offers its first Diploma of Education course, forging its first formal link with The Training College
1913 The Training College renamed the Teachers' College
1917 Free Kindergarten Union of Victoria begins a two-year independent training course
1919 John Smyth appointed to the First Professorial Chair of Education at the University of Melbourne
1922 The Melbourne Kindergarten Training College (of the Free Kindergarten Union of Victoria) opens at 'Mooroolbeek' in Kew
1923 The Faculty of Education formed at The University of Melbourne
1926 The first Master of Education degree is conferred by the University of Melbourne
1936 The first graduate entry Bachelor of Education degree is conferred by the University of Melbourne
1942 Major renovations are completed to Frank Tate Building
1950 The Secondary Teachers'  Training Centre begins with Alice Hoy as its initial principal
1952 The Technical Teachers' College is established and later becomes the Hawthorn Institute of Education
1953 The Secondary Teachers'  Training Centre becomes the Secondary Teachers' College
1959 Construction of the Alice Hoy Building commences
1962 The Alice Hoy Building officially opens and houses the Secondary Teachers' College
1966 First four-year course (Higher Diploma of Teaching Secondary) commences at the Secondary Teachers' College
1967 First students enrol in Bachelor of Science (Education) degree, a University of Melbourne course taught largely by Secondary Teachers' College staff
1972 The Victorian Education Department amalgamates the Melbourne Teachers' College and the Secondary Teachers' College forming the Melbourne College of Education
1972 Doug McDonell (who had been principal of the Secondary Teachers' College since 1958) is appointed principal of the Melbourne College of Education
1972 The 1888 Building achieves National Trust classification
1973 Melbourne College of Education becomes a constituent college of the State College of Victoria (one of 11 under the SCV banner) with the official title of State College of Victoria at Melbourne though known universally as Melbourne State College
1973 The Technical Teachers' College becomes the State College of Victoria at Hawthorn
1973 Melbourne Kindergarten Teachers' College becomes the State College of Victoria - Institute of Early Childhood Development located in Kew
1973 Hostel facilities close at the 1888 Building to make room for teaching and office space
1974 Graham Allen is appointed by the College Council to be the first principal of Melbourne State College
1974 The Victorian Government acquires the Abbotsford campus for the purpose of relocating the State College of Victoria - Institute of Early Childhood Development
1978 The Victorian Post-Secondary Education Commission is created.
1980 First Honorary Doctorate in Education is conferred by the University of Melbourne
1981 The Victorian Government disbands the State College of Victoria.  Individual colleges remain as stand alone institutions
1982 The State College of Victoria at Hawthorn becomes Hawthorn Institute of Education
1983 The Melbourne College of Advanced Education Act amalgamates the Melbourne State College and the Institute of Early Childhood Development forming the Melbourne College of Advanced Education
1989 The Melbourne College of Advanced Education becomes amalgamated with The University of Melbourne
1989 Melbourne College of Advanced Education and the Faculty of Education of The University of Melbourne join to create the Institute of Education
1991 The Hawthorn Institute of Education becomes affiliated with the University of Melbourne
1994 Occupation of the 1888 Building by the University of Melbourne's School of Graduate Studies
1995 The Institute of Education is renamed the Faculty of Education
1996 Hawthorn Institute of Education is amalgamated with the University of Melbourne
2003 The 150th Anniversary of the Act of Parliament that established the University of Melbourne.
2008 The Faculty of Education becomes the Melbourne Graduate School of Education.

While the School has used its best endeavours to ensure the accuracy of the dates and events, as with all history there is and always will be interpretation.
