Melbourne Graduate School of Education About Us

Teach For Australia

The Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) is proud to be part of the exciting new Teach For Australia initiative.

Teach For Australia is an independent, not-for-profit social enterprise that aims to improve student outcomes in areas of educational disadvantage by attracting and supporting outstanding graduates from any discipline to teach in disadvantaged schools for two years. In this first year, it is running in Victoria and welcoming applicants from across Australia.

We are working with Teach For Australia to design and deliver the academic curriculum and mentor development aspects of the program. Throughout their two-year teaching placement, Teach For Australia Associates study towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching, through a combination of intense on-campus blocks of study and self-paced distance study. They are supported throughout their placement by a network of in-school Mentors and Educational Advisers.

At the end of the two years, the Teach For Australia Associates will have met the requirements for VIT registration in Victoria. Associates will have the opportunity to return to their studies any time over the following 5 years and complete a further semester to receive the Master of Teaching.

Some Associates will remain in education and some will move onto other areas, however, a network of skilled and socially aware alumni will be developed.  The group will operate in a wide range of leadership roles, while continuing to engage with Teach For Australia on educational and social issues.  They will continue to raise and preserve the status of teaching in Australia and to address educational disadvantage in a variety of ways.

The network of schools involved in Teach For Australia is being developed by the Victorian Department for Education and Early Childhood Development in partnership with Teach For Australia, concentrating on selected areas of the state.

The first intake of approximately 60 Associates will be in late November 2009.
