Past Reunions

October 2007 - TITC Graduates of 1960 Reunion

November 2006 - 55 Year Reunion - 1951 Melbourne Teachers College

Friday 10 November saw the Frank Tate room filled with laughter and conversation as 55 alumni from the Melbourne Teachers College graduating class of 1951 convened; the attendance figures quite symbolic for their 55 year reunion!

The last time this group was together was in 2001 - as can be imagined, there was a great deal to catch up on. After much reminiscing and chuckling over old photographs, attention was turned to Associate Professor David Beckett, Doctor of Education program co-ordinator, who appeared on behalf of the Dean to give an engaging presentation to the group on the changes underway at the University and the new direction moving forward. There was lively discussion amongst the group about the new Melbourne Model and what it means for teaching as a profession and as a field of study. Many alumni spoke of children and grandchildren who are currently studying or hoping to study at the University so were keen to hear how the changes would affect them.

Dr Graham Corr must be once again commended for his fabulous efforts in bringing the group together. Everyone agreed the event was a great success and Graham finished proceedings by presenting Assoc. Professor Becket with a generous donation collected from all the alumni present, which will contribute to the Faculty of Education’s research budget.

Details of the next Melbourne Teachers College gathering will be published on the noticeboard, or you can contact the Faculty of Education or Graham for details on 03 9873 4326.

Singapore 2004

On Friday 24 September 2004 Faculty of Education alumni and friends were invited to attend a reception at the Hilton Hotel in Singapore.

Preceding this reception, alumni were invited to attend a presentation by Associate Professor Glenda McNaughton, the Director of the Centre for Equity and Innovation in Early Childhood. Titled “Making better worlds: why early childhood curriculum matters to civil society in the 21 st century ”, this presentation explored the shifting ways in which images of the young child, of the Early Childhood teacher and the Early Childhood curriculum are shaping understandings of what Early Childhood education can and should be in the early 21 st century.

Melbourne Teachers College 2001

Class of ‘51 reunion: More than 130 former Melbourne Teachers College students from around Australia – and one from Canada – returned to their old campus for a 50th anniversary reunion in the Gryphon Gallery. Participants in the reunion were students in the last of the one-year and first of the two-year certificate programs for primary teacher training introduced in 1951. Teacher training programs were later extended to three years and today’s student teachers – in all streams – do a four-year University of Melbourne Bachelor of Education degree. Dean of Education, Professor Brian Caldwell, who addressed the gathering, expressed admiration for the enthusiasm that has brought the now retired teachers together regularly since their first reunion on their 25th anniversary.

Dr Corr reported the event was “very successful” and will result in a donation to the Faculty of Education’s research budget.
