Melbourne Graduate School of Education - Queen’s Birthday Honours and Australia Day Honours

The Melbourne Graduate School of Education is proud to announce the list of alumni who were awarded Queen’s Birthday Honours and Australia Day Honours for their contribution and achievements across a broad range of fields.


Australia Day Honours 2006


  • Mr Alan J. Davis, PSM was awarded a Public Service Medal, in recognition of outstanding public service and contribution to education both in Victoria and in the Maldives, especially in the wake of the Boxing Day Tsunami.
  • Professor Marcia V. George, OAM was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, in recognition of service to nursing, particularly the development and implementation of new treatment and care methods for patients with cardiovascular disease.
  • Ms Sara E. Kenfield, PSM was awarded a Public Service Medal, in recognition of outstanding public service in the education of deaf and hearing-impaired students.
  • Mrs Lynette Swinburne, AM was made a Member of the Order of Australia, in recognition of service to women with breast cancer and their families through the establishment and development of Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Queens Birthday Honours 2007


  • Ms Susan M. Pascoe, AM was awarded Member of the Order of Australia for service to education through a range of executive roles, particularly in the Catholic education sector, to curriculum policy development, to international relations through initiatives to provide opportunities and resources for educators in the Pacific.
  • Mr Eddy M. Abraham, OAM was awarded Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the community through migrant assistance, multicultural media programs, and activities supporting senior citizens.
  • The Rev Brother Henry F. O'Halloran, OAM was awarded Medal of the Order of Australia for service to education as a teacher and administrator in the Catholic sector.
  • Mr Lynn K. Murrell, OAM was awarded Medal of the Order of Australia for service to conservation and the environment through organisations involved with natural resource management and protection, and to local government.
  • Sister Eileen A. Daffy, AO was awarded Officer of the Order of Australia for service to education through leadership and development roles in Catholic secondary schools in Australia and Pakistan, and to the community through Caritas Pakistan.
  • Mr John Burt, OAM was awarded Medal of the Order of Australia for service to education, particularly through the Ballarat Specialist School, and to the community through a range of sporting and service organisations.
  • Mr Mohamed A. Hassan, OAM was awarded Medal of the Order of Australia for service to education and to the Islamic community, particularly as the founding Director of Minaret College.
  • Ms Valerie J. Gill, PSM was awarded Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asperger Syndrome.
  • Professor Anne Kelso, AO was awarded Officer of the Order of Australia for service to science, particularly in the field of immunology and vaccine research through contributions to a range of scientific organisations, and as an academic and mentor.

Member of the Order of Australia

  • Mr Graeme L. HERRING, AM (BCom 1955, Grad Dip Education 1958) - alumnus
    For service to business through the Australian Tax Research Foundation, to the accountancy profession, and to the community through Anglican Church organisations.
  • Dr Robert L. ILES, AM (BA 1966, Grad Dip Education 1967, Masters Education 1982) - alumnus
    For service to education as Principal of The Scots College, Sydney and through support for professional organisations, and to the community.
  • Mr Desmond J. POWER, AM (BA 1964, Grad Dip Education 1965, BEd Postgraduate 1967) - alumnus
    For service to tourism development in Queensland through the identification, facilitation and promotion of major cultural and sporting events, to the film, television, and broadcasting industries, and to the community.

Medal of the Order of Australia

  • Mrs May HALE, OAM (BEd) - alumna
    For service to early childhood education and through youth and church programs in the Nillumbik area.
  • Ms Margaret E. HEFFERNAN, OAM (BEd) - alumna
    For service to the community in the area of women's health, particularly gynaecological cancer, and through cultural organisations.
  • Mrs Janeanne D. LEE OAM (Grad Dip Curriculum, BSc 1981) - alumna
    For service to youth through the Guiding movement.
  • Mrs Mary T. VIRTUE, OAM (BA 1972, Grad Dip Education 1974) - alumna
    For service to the community as a manager and presenter of multicultural music and media programs.

Australia Day Honours 2005


  • Professor John Philip Keeves, AM  (BEd 1964, MEd 1967) was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia, for service to educational research, particularly the development of statistical methods for measuring and analysing educational outcomes and to professional organisations and mentoring of research associates and students.
  • Ms Kathleen Hilton, OAM  (BA 1968, GDipEd 1982) was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, for service to young people through programs and support services of the Ardoch Youth Foundation.
  • The Reverend Dr Peter Leonard Swain OAM, RFD (BA 1959, GDipEd 1965, BEd 1968) was a awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the Uniting Church in Australia and to religious education, particularly through Newington College and the Australian Association for Religious Education.
  • Mr Anthony Gerrard Walker ASM, (GDipEd 1996)was awarded an Ambulance Service Medal, for outstanding contribution to the Victoria Ambulance Service.

Queens Birthday Honours 2005


  • Mr Kimberley J Fallon, PSM (BSc 1970, GDipEd 1985)was awarded a Public Services Medal, in recognition for outstanding public service to education.
  • Ms Judith M. Houston, OAM (BA 1961, GDip Social Studies 1963, GDipEd 1984)was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, for service to the community in the area of social justice and to the annual music festival, ‘Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields’.
  • Professor Arthur M. Lucas, AO, CBE (BSc 1963, GDipEd 1964, BEd (PG) 1968)was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia, for service to educational administration through developing initiatives and collaborations between Australian and British tertiary institutions, and through raising awareness internationally of the quality and significance of Australian scientific research.
  • Mrs Julie Meadows, OAM (GDipEd) was awarded the Medal of an Order of Australia, for service to the community through the Write Your Story program of the Makor Jewish Community Library.
