From the fifties
John J. Ryan BSc BEd PhD
I began my teaching career as a student teacher in 1949 and was
awarded an Education Department secondary studentship in 1950 to complete
a degree and Dip Ed. I taught for 12 years in Victorian technical
schools (Footscray and Caulfield) and completed a BEd and PhD (in
chemistry). I joined the staff of the Secondary Teachers College
in 1969 as a lecturer in chemistry and was head of the department
from 1971 to 1977. I was also President of the Council of Teachers
College Staff Association (Victoria) from 1971-75 and was appointed
Vice Principal of Melbourne State College in 1977. I resigned as Assistant
Director of Melbourne College of Advanced Education in 1987.
I have also been a Senior Associate in the Department of Science and
Mathematics Education of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at the University
of Melbourne from 1992-2002. I have also published a book,
'A Joint Venture in Human Ideals' - History of the Bachelor
of Science Education degree at the University of Melbourne.
From the seventies
Beverley Walsh (from ‘70)
Beverley’s working life in education began in the mid 70s at
Toorak State College, a sister to Melbourne State College. She
commenced as secretary to a teaching department and ended as secretary
to the College Principal, Dr. Norman Curry, now Deputy Chancellor
of the University of Melbourne. Beverley spent the next nine
years in secretarial/administration at Methodist Ladies' College and
Victoria College, Burwood Campus (formerly Burwood State College).
Simultaneously, she took up VCE study, an unfulfilled goal of
hers and followed up these studies with the commencement of an arts
degree at Monash University, later transferring to the University
of Melbourne and finally completing her Bachelor of Arts in 1999.
In 1991 she began working for the Education School at the School
of Early Childhood Studies at the Kew Campus and continued my work
as a Student Adviser in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education Office at Parkville
until late 2002. She has just re-commenced study at the University
of Melbourne taking up the challenges of a Postgraduate Diploma in
Arts (History).
Ian Moore (from ’70)
After teaching in primary, then secondary schools, the sixties
found me at the ABC presenting Mathematics broadcasts on Channel 2.
During this period I co-authored seven Mathematics texts and in 1971
I was president of the Mathematical Association of Victoria. Then
came Teacher Education at Melbourne State College where in 1975 I
became head of the Philosophy Department. I was appointed Dean of
Education at Ballarat CAE in 1985. Since retirement in 1989 I have
maintained my interests in Philosophy and Mathematics, and am increasingly
rediscovering joys in family life, cooking, tennis, reading, music
and travelling.
Desmond. J. Connelly B.A., B.Ed., Dip.Ed.Admin., PhD (from
’77)
I was appointed Principal of the Institute of Early Childhood Development
in 1977 and continued in this position when it was amalgamated with
Melbourne State College to form Melbourne College of Advanced Education
(MCAE), an amalgamation that was finally completed in 1984.
I was appointed Assistant Director of the MCAE while remaining Head
of the Institute. When the MCAE joined the Melbourne Graduate School of Education
of the University of Melbourne to form the Institute of Education
in 1989, I became an Associate Dean till 1993 with responsibilities
for Graduate Programs. I also worked on the University’s
Academic Committee, which I chaired for three years. Since retiring
from the University I have been active as a public speaker, tutor
and consultant in the area of investment information.
From 2000 and onwards
Sue MacDonald (from ’01)
I completed my Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts) at the Victoria College,
and went on to complete my Graduate Diploma in Education at the former
Bendigo College of Advanced Education, progressing to teach art for
seven years at Donald High School. Since then I have taught
at Penleigh & Essendon Grammar and joined St Catherine’s
School in 1998 teaching art and photography studies. In 1998
I was awarded the Wallace McCann Scholarship by Arts Education Victoria,
which allowed me to travel to the United Kingdom, Europe and America
to visit schools to investigate arts education practises, to undertake
a teacher exchange in Denmark and tour galleries & museums. Since
returning to Australia in 2001 I completed a University of Melbourne
Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Student Welfare) and
has since been the recipient of a William & Kate Herschell Scholarship
offered by the Melbourne Graduate School of Education which has allowed me to undertake
my Master of Education focusing on student welfare. I currently
continue to teach at St Catherine’s. smacdonald@stcatherines.net.au
