Musica Viva
Neryl Jeanneret, Andrew Swainston
Funded by a 2007 Graduate School of Education Competitive Grant, The Musica Viva In Schools program involves musicians in working schools as well as professional development for teachers and support material. The concerts for schools program was established in 1948 and expanded in the late 1980s to include teacher support materials. The National Review of Music in Schools (DEST, 2005) reported very favourably on the contribution of Musica Viva In Schools to music education by providing a range of musicians, composers and groups across cultures to work in schools.
Dr Neryl Jeanneret and Andrew Swainston are currently involved in two research projects with Musica Viva:
Music Generator
This project is assessing the impact of a number of Musica Viva In Schools programs in a regional Victorian community. The project involves 13 schools with two performing groups (Sirocco and Imbosema) over three years and is funded by the Australia Council.
Musica Viva in Primary Schools: A Case Study
This project is a case study of the Byar (Balinese gamelan) program in a small, state, metropolitan primary school. The focus of the study is to examine ways in which the program might be more inclusive of the generalist primary teacher's needs and cross curricula perspectives. The project is being funded by a Faculty of Education grant and in-kind support from Musica Viva
